What is Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation at Desert Regional Medical Center?

Acute Rehabilitation (also known as inpatient rehabilitation) involves intensive services provided by an interdisciplinary team, all within a hospital environment to help improve a patient’s recovery. Patients work with two to three therapy specialists while being cared for by a physician who is board-certified in rehabilitation, as well as specially-trained rehabilitation nurses. Patients participate in three hours of therapy, five days a week. This time is divided throughout the day between physical and occupational therapy, and speech therapy if needed.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy assesses mobility and focuses on improving strength, transfers (e.g. moving from bed to chair, in and out of a car), walking or wheelchair mobility, stair training and motor skills. The physical therapy team will work with you to meet your goals and regain as much strength, stability and mobility as possible. Our goal is to help you to become as independent as possible.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is focused on activities of daily living (sometimes called occupations). These activities include everything from bathing to dressing, from oral care to toileting and fine motor coordination. The goal of training is to help you gain as much independence as possible while staying safe. We work with you to help you retrain, adapt, and modify these tasks to achieve improved quality of life.

Speech Therapy

The term speech therapy can be misleading because it includes so much more than speech. Our speech pathologists help identify your speech issues and work with you to recover and develop strategies to compensate. Areas of training include speech, language, communication skills, cognitive, skills, reading, writing, and oral/feeding/swallowing skills.

Our goal: To help patients reach the highest level of ability after an accident, illness, or injury
