Desert Regional Medical Center to Unveil New Linear Accelerator at December 14 Ribbon Cutting

Dec 12, 2016

Technology will provide valley with faster, more precise, accurate cancer treatment—with fewer side effects.

PALM SPRINGS – Desert Regional will host a ribbon cutting event for the installation of its new linear accelerator on December 14 at the Comprehensive Cancer Center in Palm Springs. The technology represents a multi-million dollar investment in some of the latest technology and will provide patients with faster, more precise and accurate cancer treatment. The event, co-hosted by the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, will include a dedication ceremony by local officials, remarks by Cancer Center leadership, and a guided tour of the new technology. It will take place from 11 am to Noon on Wednesday, December 14.

“This new linear accelerator will allow our patients to receive radiation treatment in as little as one minute,” said Amir Lavaf, MD, Director of Radiation Oncology.  “This means that from start to finish, including imaging, our patients could be in and out in less than 30 minutes.”

Speed is just one of the benefits for patients.  Tumors can now be targeted with 0.1 millimeters of precision—ensuring that cancerous tissue is destroyed with limited damage to other tissue.  The device is augmented by a table that rotates, helping doctors to target tumors from many different directions without damaging tissues in the way.

“We are so excited to be able to share this new technology with the community,” said Teresa Whipple, Executive Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.  “When you combine this multi-million dollar investment with our team approach, patients can access some of the most advanced care right here in the valley.”

All members of the community are welcome to attend. The event is free and open to the press.  Full details are below:
